The Pirates have announced that pitcher Trevor Williams has been acquired from the Miami Marlins in exchange for pitcher Richard Mitchell.
Williams was a second round selection of the Marlins in the 2013 MLB Draft. The 23-year-old right-hander was a Top 10 prospect in the Marlins system prior to this year, ranking fifth by MLB.com and eighth by Baseball America. Williams is a groundball pitcher who can throw his fastball low-mid 90’s. He posted a 3.98 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP in 131 innings combined with AA Jacksonville and AAA New Orleans this season. Williams could begin 2016 with AAA Indianapolis.
Mitchell signed as an amateur player with the Pirates out of Colombia in 2011. The 20-year-old righty appeared in just ten games this year for the Gulf Coast League Pirates where he posted a 4.22 ERA along with a 1.36 WHIP.
