Baseball America announced on Thursday that Elias Diaz has been named the 2015 Captain’s Catcher Award recipient for the best defensive catcher in all the minors.
Diaz has always been regarded as a strong defensive catcher ever since he signed with the Pirates out of Venezuela in 2008. The 24-year-old backstop played most of this year with AAA Indianapolis where he threw out 30% of opposing baserunners. The Pirates rewarded Diaz with a September call up to be the third catcher. Chris Stewart will likely return as the Pirates backup catcher next season, so Diaz will head back to Indianapolis to begin 2016.
