John Dreker of Pirates Prospects has reported that Gorkys Hernandez and Wilfredo Boscan have elected to become free agents.
Hernandez returned to the Pirates last offseason after being acquired by them from the Atlanta Braves as part of the Nate McLouth deal back in 2009. A former Baseball America Top 100 prospect, Hernandez made his debut for the Pirates in May of 2012. He was dealt at the trade deadline that year to the Miami Marlins in the Gaby Sanchez deal. Hernandez spent most of 2015 with AAA Indianapolis where he hit .288 with a .771 OPS in 104 games played. He also appeared in eight games with the Pirates, primarily as a pinch-runner.
Boscan signed a minor league deal with the Pirates last offseason. The 25-year-old right-hander pitched mainly in the Indianapolis rotation, posting a 3.07 ERA along with a 1.39 WHIP in 126 innings of work. Boscan was called up by the Pirates on three different occasions, but was never used at any point.
