According to Peter Gammons, the San Diego Padres are set to interview Pirates third base coach Rick Sofield for their managerial position.
The Padres were one of the more disappointing teams in baseball in 2015. Despite bringing in big name players such as James Shields, Justin Upton, Wil Myers and Craig Kimbrel, the Padres had a 74-88 record while finishing fourth in the NL West. Their season saw manager Bud Black relieved of his duties, and Pat Murphy taking over on an interim basis. Murphy was let go after the season.
Sofield first came to the Pirates in 2002 as the minor league fielding coordinator. He returned to the organization in 2012 where he managed the West Virginia Power. Sofield joined Clint Hurdle’s staff in 2013 as the first base coach. After two seasons coaching at first, he switched over to third base this year.
