The Pirates have announced that Vance Worley has been called back up. Radhames Liz has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Worley.
With the doubleheader today, the Pirates can use Worley for multiple innings out of the bullpen if need be. He was designated for assignment when Joe Blanton was acquired prior to the trade deadline from the Kansas City Royals. Worley had pitched in the Indianapolis rotation, as well as the first round of the International League playoffs.
Liz signed a one-year deal with the Pirates last offseason. This marks the second time this year that the hard-throwing right-hander has been DFA’d, which the other time was in May. Liz was recalled by the Bucs as a September call up after his terrific work in the rotation for Indianapolis. Unfortunately, his struggles in the big leagues continued. Liz overall posted a 4.24 ERA along with a 1.63 WHIP in 14 appearances with the Pirates.
