A.J. Burnett Returns Thursday; Gerrit Cole Will Have His Next Start Skipped

By Jason Shetler

Manager Clint Hurdle announced that A.J. Burnett will make his return on Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Hurdle also announced that Gerrit Cole will have his next start in the rotation skipped in an effort to limit some innings.

Burnett was placed on the disabled list July 31st with right elbow inflammation. The same day he went on the DL, the Pirates acquired J.A. Happ from the Seattle Mariners, and was put into the rotation as Burnett’s replacement. In 21 starts this season, Burnett has posted a 3.06 ERA along with a 126 ERA+.

Cole as mentioned will be skipped a start, as his next outing would have been Friday against the Brewers. Instead, the plan will be to have him pitch one of the games of next Tuesday’s doubleheader versus the Chicago Cubs. Cole has been superb this year, posting a 2.54 ERA and a 151 ERA+ in 28 starts.
