The Pirates have announced that pitcher Josh Wall has been called up. In a corresponding move to make room for Wall on the roster, Pedro Florimon has been designated for assignment.
Wall signed with the Pirates on a minor league deal this past offseason. The 28-year-old righty has posted a 2.93 ERA along with a 1.01 WHIP and a K/9 of 8.5 in 24 appearances for AAA Indianapolis. Wall has previously had two brief big league stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Pirates bullpen has been overworked lately, so Wall will provide them with an extra arm for the time being.
Florimon was called up to the Pirates in July. The switch-hitting shortstop had served as the primary backup to Jung-Ho Kang with Jordy Mercer on the DL. Florimon played in 15 games with the Bucs, batting just .105 with a .401 OPS, but did deliver a game-winning hit in last night’s 15 inning performance against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Florimon will almost certainly clear waivers.
