The Pirates have announced that Joe Blanton has been acquired from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations. He was designated for assignment on Tuesday to make room for Ben Zobrist.
Blanton signed with the Royals on a minor league deal a month before Spring Training. The 34-year-old right-hander is having a pretty good season, posting a 3.89 ERA along with a 3.53 Fielding Independent Pitching and a 1.20 WHIP. He’s shown excellent control with a 1.5 BB/9 while his K/9 has been good at 8.6 in 41.2 innings of work. Blanton will give the Pirates another multiple inning arm out of the bullpen, as well as a spot starter if need be.
