Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review was on MLB Network’s “The Rundown” today, and mentioned that the Pirates will be calling up third baseman Brent Morel from AAA Indianapolis.
Morel was claimed by the Pirates off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays in February of last year. The former Chicago White Sox top prospect played in 23 games for the Pirates last season where he batted just .179 with a .450 OPS. Morel began this year with Indianapolis, and has put up decent numbers, hitting .266 along with a .763 OPS in 81 games played. The Pirates have said that Jung-Ho Kang will be the shortstop while Jordy Mercer is out with a leg injury. Morel meanwhile will take over at third base as a short term solution.
