Pitching Matchup: James McDonald (2-2, 4.38 ERA) vs Marco Estrada (2-1, 3.86 ERA)

Game Notes

Pirates: James McDonald’s last start in Milwaukee wasn’t good, as he gave up eight runs (seven earned) and allowed four home runs in just 2.2 innings on September 2nd last year.

Andrew McCutchen is 4-for-16 with a home run against Marco Estrada.

Garrett Jones is batting .364 with four doubles and two home runs in his last seven games.

Brewers: In eight games pitched (five starts), Marco Estrada has a 1.43 ERA vs the Pirates.

Ryan Braun is 6-for-13 with a pair of homers against James McDonald.

In his last six games, Carlos Gomez is hitting .500 with three doubles, two homers and a triple.


Bucs Minor League Report 4/29

AAA: Indianapolis defeats Gwinnett by a score of 3-2.

Andy Oliver pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits, walked two and struckout seven in a no-decision (3.34 ERA). Felix Pie was 2-for-4 (.172) with a run scored and was ejected from the game (arguing balls and strikes). Jared Goedert went 1-for-3 (.203) with an RBI double and a walk. Jordy Mercer was 1-for-4 (.330) and scored a run.

AA: Altoona blanked Akron 2-0.

Stolmy Pimentel threw seven shutout innings, allowed just one walk and had five strikeouts in the victory (0.30 ERA). Alex Dickerson goes 1-for-3 (.192) with a home run (2). Matt Curry was 1-for-4 (.259) with an RBI. Andy Vasquez went 1-for-3 (.353) with a walk, a stolen base (3) and a run scored.

High A: Brevard County defeated Bradenton by a final of 6-1.

Matt Benedict goes 5.2 innings, giving up six runs on ten hits, walked four and struckout three in the loss (4.97 ERA). Dan Gamache was 1-for-3 (.290) and drove in the lone Marauders run. Jake Stallings went 1-for-4 (.228) with a double. Alen Hanson (.247) and Gregory Polanco (.318) were both 0-for-3.

Low A: West Virginia cruised to a 10-1 victory over Savannah.

Tyler Glasnow pitches five scoreless, walking two and fanning seven to pick up the win (1.70 ERA). Stetson Allie went 2-for-5 (.351) with two home runs (7,8) and five RBI. Barrett Barnes was 3-for-5 (.237) with an RBI, stole a base (2) and scored twice. Josh Bell went 2-for-4 (.277) with a pair of doubles and three RBI.



Jonathan Sanchez Demoted to Bullpen

The Pirates have announced that Jonathan Sanchez has been moved to the bullpen and Jeanmar Gomez will take his place in the rotation for the time being. Sanchez has struggled mightily since making the club out of Spring Training, posting a 12.71 ERA and a 2.56 WHIP in  four starts. Meanwhile, Gomez has made five appearances out of the bullpen and has posted a 2.63 ERA along with a 1.39 WHIP. Gomez will make his first start on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pitching Matchup: Wandy Rodriguez (2-0, 1.66 ERA) vs Yovani Gallardo (2-1, 4.97 ERA)

Game Notes

Pirates: Wandy Rodriguez has a 5.88 ERA in 12 career starts at Miller Park.

Andrew McCutchen is 7-for-24 (.820 OPS) with a home run vs Yovani Gallardo.

Pedro Alvarez is 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts against Gallardo.

Brewers: Yovani Gallardo has a career 2.59 ERA in 15 games pitched (14 starts) against the Pirates.

Ryan Braun has a 1.239 OPS and four home runs in 39 at bats vs Wandy Rodriguez.

Game Notes

Pirates: Jeff Locke makes his first career start against the Cardinals.

Andrew McCutchen will not be in the lineup today (day off).

Cardinals: Shelby Miller went six innings and gave up two runs in his last outing against the Pirates.

Yadier Molina is batting .438 to this point against left-handed pitching.

AAA: Indianapolis defeated Gwinnett by a score of 4-1.

Gerrit Cole pitches seven innings, giving up one on three hits, walked four and had five strikeouts in the victory (2.31 ERA).  Matt Hague was 3-for-4 (.313) including two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Jordy Mercer went 2-for-4 (.337) with an RBI. Alex Presley was 2-for-4 (.357).

AA: Erie wins 3-1 over Altoona.

Jameson Taillon pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walked two and fanned seven in the loss (3.03 ERA). Oscar Tejeda went 3-for-4 (.600) with a double. Carlos Paulino was 2-for-3 (.204) with an RBI. Matt Curry went 1-for-4 (.256).

High A: St. Lucie defeated Bradenton 13-5.

Robby Rowland goes four innings, surrendered five runs on five hits, walked three and had a pair of strikeouts (4.76 ERA). Gregory Polanco was 2-for-5 (.346) with a home run (2). Willy Garcia went 2-for-5 (.222) with a triple, an RBI and scored a run. Alen Hanson was 1-for-3 (.268) with two walks and a run scored.

Low A: Savannah shutout West Virginia by a final of 1-0.

Orlando Castro threw 6.2 innings, allowed one run on six hits, walked none and struckout four in defeat (1.67 ERA). D.J. Crumlich went 2-for-3 (.235). Barrett Barnes was 1-for-3 (.182). Stetson Allie went 0-for-3 (.341). Josh Bell goes 0-for-4 (.258).

AAA: Indianapolis wins 5-1 over Lehigh Valley.

Brandon Cumpton tossed seven shutout innings, walking one and striking out three in the victory (3.44 ERA). Josh Harrison went 2-for-3 (.333) including a double, an RBI, a walk, two stolen bases (4,5) and three runs scored. Matt Hague was 1-for-4 (.291) with a pair of RBI. Jordy Mercer goes 1-for-3 (.329) with an RBI triple and walked.

AA: Erie defeated Altoona by a final of 7-3.

Casey Sadler threw four innings, gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked two and struckout three in the losing effort (2.79 ERA). Andrew Lambo was 1-for-4 (.329) with a home run (3). Gift Ngoepe went 1-for-4 (.150) with an RBI triple and scored a run. Matt Curry was 1-for-3 (.257) with an RBI, a walk and stole a base (2).

High A: St. Lucie with a 5-2 victory over Bradenton.

Eliecer Navarro pitched six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked none and had four strikeouts in defeat (3.70 ERA). Jake Stallings went 2-for-2 (.224) with a double and came around to score. Alen Hanson was 1-for-4 (.266) with an RBI double. Gregory Polanco went 1-for-4 (.342).

Low A: Savannah defeats West Virginia by a score of 4-2.

Clay Holmes pitches five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walked four and did not strikeout a batter in the loss (3.91 ERA). Raul Fortunato was 2-for-4 (.286) with an RBI and a run scored. Stetson Allie went 1-for-4 with a double (.353). Josh Bell goes 0-for-4 (.270).

Alex Presley went 2-for-4 (.361) with a walk and scored three times. Josh Harrison was 2-for-3 as he drew a walk , stole a base (2) and scored twice.

AA: Altoona had an off day.

High A: Bradenton defeated St. Lucie by a score of 9-1.

Adrian Sampson goes 4.2 innings, allowed one run on three hits, walked three and had a pair of strikeouts in a no-decision (4.86 ERA). Gregory Polanco went 2-for-4 (.347) with two doubles, a walk and four RBI. Alen Hanson was 3-for-5 (.267) with two RBI and scored a pair of runs. Dan Gamache went 2-for-5 (.295) with an RBI and a stolen base (3).

Low A: West Virginia blanks Charleston by a final of 7-0.

Joely Rodriguez pitches 5.1 scoreless, allowed one walk and struckout four to pick up the win. (4.68 ERA). Wyatt Mathisen was 3-for-4 (.207) including a double and a run scored. Max Moroff went 1-for-2 (.221) with a home run (2) and a walk. Dilson Herrera was 1-for-5 (.268) with a two-run triple and came around to score. Josh Bell goes 1-for-4 (.282) with an RBI.
