Pirates Sign Hector Luna

By Jason Shetler

According to Tim Williams, the Pirates have signed Hector Luna to a minor league contract and have assigned him to Indianapolis to help out with their playoff run. The 32-year old infielder hit .282 with a .779 OPS in 220 at bats this season for the Phillies AAA affiliate Lehigh Valley.

Matt Curry headed to Indianapolis

By Jason Shetler

According to the first baseman himself (via twitter), he has been promoted to Indianapolis. Curry hit .285 with an .832 OPS in 396 at bats for the Altoona Curve. His promotion from Altoona to Indianapolis comes just a day after the Pirates promoted Gerrit Cole from the Curve to the Indians. As the Pirates get set to make September call ups, Indianapolis will need players themselves for the International League playoffs. Plus Curry needed to be promoted as his age would suggest that he’s a little too old for the AA level.

Pirates promote Gerrit Cole to Indianapolis

By Jason Shetler

After speculation as to whether or not Gerrit Cole would see AAA action before the season was over, that speculation is now reality as the Pirates have promoted Cole to Indianapolis. This according to Cory Giger of the Altoona Mirror. Cole was promoted from Bradenton to Altoona back on June 20th where he posted a 2.90 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 12 starts for the Curve. Since the Pirates really had no intention of having Cole on the big league club in September, having him pitch in the AAA playoffs is the next best thing. It not only allows the Pirates to promote pitchers who are already on the 40-man roster to Pittsburgh, but it gives someone like Cole big game experience for the playoffs.

Pirates call up Chase d’Arnaud

By Jason Shetler

According to Michael Sanserino, the Pirates have called up Chase d’Arnaud from Indianapolis in a corresponding move for the release of Erik Bedard. d’Arnaud made his Pirates debut in June of last year where he hit just .217 with a .528 OPS in 143 at bats. This season he was hitting .247 with a .701 OPS in 377 at bats, and stole 33 bases in 38 attempts for Indy. The decision to call up d’Arnaud gives the Pirates an extra infielder in case Neil Walker is out for an extended period with lower back stiffness. The move would also signify that the Pirates are going to use a four man rotation since they have an off day Thursday and with September call ups coming next week.
