Neal Huntington yesterday came out and said that Gerrit Cole will not be a September call-up. The question was asked by Kristy Robinson of Pirates Prospects and here was Neal’s response: “We’ve not talked about it internally. My gut (feeling) is no. To drop him into bullpen up here in September is not something we have lot of interest in doing. We have a lot of other options, instead of rushing a young prospect.”
Although Neal’s answer isn’t that surprising, I thought it was a legitimate question by Kristy. It seems to be a trend the last few years to call-up a first rounder/top prospect in the midst of a postseason run. Such as the Orioles calling-up Manny Machado this past week. I know it’s not the most shocking news to hear, but there it is.
